Divorce is hard on all kids, but when parents separate in a high-conflict environment, the emotional ripple effects on kids can be profound. As the protective parent, your job is to help your children feel safe, heard, and grounded, even when the situation is chaotic.

However, navigating this situation should be strategic, since their needs differ depending on their age.

For young children, ages 3 to 6, they rely heavily on routines and familiarity. Keep their daily schedule stable—consistent bedtimes, meals, and activities to help them feel safe. Keep explanations simple and reassure them they are safe and loved.

For preteens, ages 7 to 12, this is a time of self-discovery and peer influence. They may internalize the conflict—so validate their feelings, keep communication open, and be patient if they withdraw or act out. Reassure them that their feelings are normal and okay to feel.

And for teens, ages 13 and up, autonomy is key. They may push boundaries, but they also need respect and space to process. Keep dialogue (appropriately) honest and open—without pressure—and let them know you’re there for them, even if they don’t always want to talk. You can even ask them how they would like you to be there for them and see what they say. It may surprise you.

By tailoring your approach to each stage, you give your kids a safe space and a stable foundation, so they can process and thrive despite the conflict.
